Space-based estimate of the volcanic heat flux into the atmosphere during 2001 and 2002

چکیده
Satellite remote sensing offers a convenient way to monitor changes in the thermal budgets of Earth’s subaerially active volcanoes. By using data acquired by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer, we have calculated the amount of heat released into the atmosphere by 45 volcanoes active during 2001 and 2002, in order to quantify the contribution active volcanism makes to Earth’s energy budget. We report that the amount of heat radiated into the troposphere by these volcanoes, as detected from space, was ;5.34 3 1016 and 5.30 3 1016 J/yr during 2001 and 2002, respectively. This energy flux is three orders of magnitude less than the amount of energy consumed by the United States of America for residential, manufacturing, and transportation purposes during 1999.

Anthropogenic warming of Earth's climate system.
We compared the temporal variability of the heat content of the world ocean, of the global atmosphere, and of components of Earth's cryosphere during the latter half of the 20th century. Each component has increased its heat content (the atmosphere and the ocean) or exhibited melting (the cryosphere). The estimated increase of observed global ocean heat content (over the depth range from 0 to 3...
متن کاملA simple Analytical model for solidification cooling rate based on the local heat flux density
A new simple analytical model for prediction of cooling rate in the solidification process based on the local heat flux density extracted during solidification is introduced. In the modeling procedure, a solidifying control volume is considered in the mushy zone in which a heat balance equation is used to derive the present model. As the local heat flux density is a measurable parameter, the pr...

A two-dimensional transient axi-symmetric model was developed to study the effects of various thermal and geometric parameters on cyclic heating and cooling modes of a phase-change thermal energy storage system. The high-temperature thermal energy storage device utilizes LiH for heat sink applications to store the waste heat generated during power-burst periods. The stored heat is then discharg...
متن کاملEffect of NOCOLOK® flux dry-off temperature on brazed joint strength of aluminum-based heat exchangers
During the brazing of aluminum-based heat exchangers, the flux dry-off temperature plays a crucial role to get sound joints with maximum strength. In the present study, the NOCOLOK® flux consists of two phases of K2AlF5.H2O and KAlF4 with a melting point around 580 °C was used for brazing AA3003 as base metal with a clad-coating of AA4343 as filler metal. The slurry was applied on the joints an...

In this study, some parameters such as quenching and boiling curves of a stainless steel cylindrical rod 80 mm long and having a diameter of 15 mm were experimentally obtained in saturate pure water and two nanofluids (SiO2 and TiO2) with 0.01 wt%. The cylinder was vertically lowered into the pool of saturated water and its temporal center temperature was measured by a the...
